The author was born in Philadelphia. Initially, he was enrolled in the public education system of Philadelphia, where he advanced rapidly. The system afforded him the opportunity to attend a select, public high school, Central High, where at graduation he was nominated as valedictorian.

A full tuition scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania was offered and accepted. He majored in organic chemistry and as part of an honors program, he developed and compounded a new class of drugs which were tested in Europe and marketed as antifungal agents.

In 1953, he applied to work as a student trainee physicist to the Aeronautical Instrument Laboratory of the US Navy. There, he was taught electronics and trained to test cockpit instrumentation for the US Navy and NASA's Apollo program.

Upon completion of his premedical studies, he was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. During the early years of clinical practice his interest in infectious disease of the female genital tract continued. Numerous research articles were written and accepted for publication. He was appointed Chairman of the Vaginitis committee of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD). In that position and with the help of his colleagues he organized teaching seminars which were delivered in twenty six states in The United States and seventeen countries throughout the World.
